Bearracuda Last Rickshaw Stop 1-26-13

My most enjoyable assignments are the Bearracuda Parties, and January’s Bearracuda at Rick Shaw Stop in Hayes Valley was exceptionally fun with the dynamic dj duo Robert Jeffrey and Stanley Frank on the sounds.

The two maestros played an energetic set full of rare, new, and slightly more funky and soulful than most house music clubs I’ve attended. They clown around on stage, and occasionally stop the music for a beat or two, and shout funny little exclamations like “Dance Godammit!”, and “Ain’t that rite?!”.

Andy Cross Nails Mr. Powerhouse 2013 Title

Saturday, Feb. 9:: by photojimsf :: I could not believe how jam packed the Powerhouse was at their double header back to back contests: Mr. Powerhouse 2013, and the Hookies!

It’s always a pleasure to cross paths with Andy Cross, the winner, and on this night he was extra sexy in his black leather jockstrap, boots, and not much else. Lance Holman was master of ceremony, with Darren Bondy, Ron Balos, Troy Anicete and Mr. Powerhouse 2012 Brent Gannetta judging.

After a short break, none other than Sister Roma took the mic with award winning porn star Derrick Hanson. The Rentboy.com and NakedSword.com’s Hookie award finals were on. It came down to a close contest between two of the contenders, Christopher Daniels emerged the winner, and caught the Hookie for regional best escort.

Pics will be up on EdgeSanFrancisco.com any minute now, and the out takes will be posted here at photojimsf.com in a week or two, stay tuned.

Pictured above is Mr. Powerhouse 2013, Andy Cross in the center. On the right is runner up Hanz Bustamante. On the left is Walter Gomez. The pic was taken at another Powerhouse event: BDSM 101.

San Francisco Nudity Ban Upheld in Federal Court :: EDGE San Francisco

San Francisco Nudity Ban Upheld in Federal Court

by Lisa Leff
Wednesday Jan 30, 2013

A federal judge cleared the way Tuesday for the city of San Francisco to ban most displays of public nudity, ruling that an ordinance set to take effect on Feb. 1 does not violate the free speech rights of residents and visitors who like going out in the buff.

U.S. District Court Judge Edward Chen refused to block the ban temporarily or to allow a lawsuit challenging it to proceed.

“In spite of what plaintiffs argue, nudity in and of itself is not inherently expressive,” Chen wrote in an 18-page opinion.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 7-4 last month to prohibit residents and visitors over age 5 from exposing their genitals on public streets, in parks or plazas or while using public transit.

The measure was introduced in response to a group of nudists that regularly gathers in the city’s predominantly gay Castro District. The threat of seeing outlawed a right that many people associate with free-spirited San Francisco prompted public protests and disrobing at supervisors meetings.

The activists who challenged the measure in court also had argued that the ordinance was unfair because it grants exceptions for public nudity at permitted public events such as the city’s gay pride parade and the annual Bay-to-Breakers foot race.

Chen also rejected that argument.

“The plaintiffs took an unlikely position in their case that if they couldn’t be naked everywhere, no one could be naked anywhere,” City Attorney Dennis Herrera said. “We believed their legal challenge to be baseless, and we’re grateful that the court agreed.”

Christina DiEdoardo, a lawyer for nudity advocates who sued to overturn the ban, said her clients were considering whether to appeal. DiEdoardo noted that the judge indicated he would be open to considering a revised lawsuit if advocates could cite examples of their civil rights being trampled, which could be easier to do once the ban is enforced.

“We can still come back once the ordinance takes effect,” she said.

Infamous SoMa Leather Den Likely to Become a Bar Called Driftwood — Grub Street San Francisco

The bar at 1225 Folsom Street has gone by many names over the decades — The Ramrod, My Place, Cip, Chaps II, Kok — but one constant has remained through most of that time: It’s been a dark and dirty cruise bar for gay men. A tipster pointed us yesterday to the fact that some new owners are moving in with a new name and concept, called Driftwood, which seems to signal a shift away from chain link and jock straps. The name conjures the reclaimed-wood aesthetic at nearby cocktail bar Bloodhound, not to mention the reclaimed wood aesthetic at a hundred or so other trendy spots around this and other U.S. cities, but we’ll reserve judgment for now.

We’ve reached out to new owners Shawn Magee (who also owns Amnesia in the Mission) and Christopher Milstead, but have not yet heard back about their plans. However Grub Street learned via one of the current bartenders that the staff was informed of the pending sale of the bar via email from current owner David Morgan in the last two days. We should note that the sale is not complete, and Kok Bar (link semi-NSFW) remains open, doing their Pants Off parties on Fridays, and everything else, for at least another month or two.

The recent blowup over the closure of The Eagle, and the subsequent battle to keep it a gay bar despite new lessees who were ready to move in, is not likely to be repeated here. As both My Place and Chaps and in its current state, the bar has some ardent fans, but not the community-wide love that The Eagle has for its large patio, so we’re not expecting to see protesters set on preserving this place.

But as gay studies scholar Tim Dean recently pointed out, this bar, as the Ramrod, was a leather bar back before the gay liberation movement began, since at least 1967, and only during its brief incarnation as Cip did it try to be anything else — namely a cocktail lounge with a water feature, for a brief period in 2005-06. It returned quickly to being My Place again in 2006, and then became Chaps II, with a new coat of black paint and the revival of its back room.

Sadly for some, leather bars across the country are closing as the hyper-masculine subculture has dwindled greatly since its heyday in the seventies, and the expected closing of Kok Bar follows this trend. The bar has styled itself as not all about leather in recent years, but has remained a “cruising” bar — albeit a sparsely populated one.

Gay bars outside the Castro have also become a dying breed in the last few years. (See Bold Italic’s new roundup for a smattering of those still in existence.) A bar known as Ginger’s Trois in the Financial District gave way to the reclaimed-wood covered Rickhouse just four years ago. The Eagle is hopefully still going to reopen, though there’s been no recent word on that. Deco Lounge in the Tenderloin recently closed. And Marlena’s in Hayes Valley is set to close next month.

We’ll update you with details on Driftwood as soon as they become available.

Last Call at the Powerhouse

Last night I dipped into the Powerhouse for last call, and my pal dj Guy Ruben was working the beats from this “NR& — Enemy” snippet, it’s hot but Guy really worked it into sick frenzy.

Here’s Guy with another pal, leather princess and accomplished boot black Luna SF.

And who’s this happy side kick? Perhaps a dear friend of Luna’s? Why, it’s Missy Bootlover!

There’s something happening every night at the Powerhouse, last night was Lance Holman’s monthly fun raiser and trouble making event: “Lick It!”

But if I can’t come early to catch the bondage demos, slutty go go’s, wet underwear contests, etc., at least I make it for last call, where I can slide ride in, grab a Sierra Pale Ale, say hi to all my friends, and head out to the back for a puff and a blow. By this time, the action has gotten seriously make it or break it.
