On Earth I Was Briefly Gorgeous

Yes that’s yours truly trying to be, avant-garde, creative, cosmic, or truth be told who knows what?

This is from way back in 1979. My rent was $105 a month. Myself and everybody I knew was on unemployment, and had plenty of time to do stuff like this.

I found that shiny plastic slinky toy thing around my neck at that old thrift store downtown. It was an old brick building that would have crumbled in the 89 quake. It was razed long ago to make way for that rolled up newspaper looking hi-rise at the base of California and market.

My dear friend Rick Maverick, who was a theater queen, cut the designs in my head and helped with my makeup. I must have been about 20 at the time, and wanted to be David Bowie.

Happy Pride From Photojimsf

Happy Pride. This vintage moment is from the Gay Freedom Day parade of 1986. I guess back then freedom was more important than pride.

Pictured is Joe Smith, wearing a MEN’S room sign headress and not much else.

Joe died a few years later from HIV, one of dozens more pictured during happier times in my upcoming photo exhibit “Black And White Nostalgia”.

It’s at STRUT SF, July 2019. Opening reception is Friday July 12.

Should I Or Shouldn’t I?

Archangel Of The West Village, Wigstock NYC 1994.

I was so lucky to get a full length shot of this celestial creature, Wigstock was so crowded that year, 1994. It took more than 20 clicks before I got one that wasn’t obscured by 200,000 queens in wigs.

Should it be included in my up-coming show “Black And White Nostalgia” at STRUT SF in July? It’s a photographic romp through gay San Francisco from the late 70’s to the late 90’s. Yet this image is from New York City.

Hasn’t every gay man in SF been to our bigger, used to be more expensive sister city at least — a hundred times? I’m leaning towards pairing this vintage moment with dozens more local classic must-sees from the same era.

Vintage Gay SF — Who Is He?

20190427_161855 strut show-017336091192138706178..jpg

This image is from a gay pride parade around 1989 or 90. It’s one of dozens under consideration for two photo exhibits this summer, at the Harvey Milk Center in June, and at STRUT SF this July.

Intimidating at first, this tattood hunk of muscle was quite sweet in the end. He took my card but I never heard from him. Several collectors have suggested that he’s made a few adult films.

Waddaya think? Hot or not? Your type? Should I put his picture in the show? Know who he is, and where I could contact him these days?
